You could take 837 stairs to the top of Reunion Tower. The Cloud 9 Café on the observation deck is still open, too. However, the observation deck is still there and open to the public. It permanently closed in April, 2020 due to the economic toll of the government-mandated shutdown in response to COVID. The Five Sixty restaurant was owned by Wolfgang Puck. There is a restaurant and an observation deck on the top of Reunion. In contrast, the original plan included a cap shaped observation deck. These light up at night, making the Reunion Tower visible from a great distance. There are lights at every one of the 260 intersections of the aluminum struts. This creates the open glass sphere that houses the top three levels of the building. The Reunion Ball weighs 500 tons and is made from two miles of aluminum pipe. Furthermore, the initial design didn’t include that big ball on the top. Reunion Tower was almost named Esplanade instead. The utopian colony disbanded several years later, though some of their descendants remain in the area. The “La Reunion” Utopian community was established in 1855. Reunion Tower gets its name from a mostly forgotten French colony. Reunion Tower opened to the public in 1978. It is now a hub for Amtrak, the Dallas Area Rapid Transit or DART, and the Trinity Railway Express (TRE). Note that Union Station has since reopened. The land was cheap because the nearby Union Station had closed. Hunt bought the first twenty acres for the project back when it was a vacant corner of downtown. The 560 foot tower is the fifteenth tallest building in the city. The spherical ball on top of the long narrow tower is one of the most recognizable landmarks, and that’s why it is as likely to appear on postcards as the Dallas Cowboys stadium. Reunion Tower has been featured in numerous TV shows and movies including Dallas, The Tree of Life, Robocop, The Amazing Race 26 and Walker, Texas Ranger.Reunion Tower is one of the hallmarks of the Dallas skyline.Fortunately, the trip back down to the lobby takes the same amount of time. The elevator trip from the lobby to the GeO-Deck takes 65 seconds.The lights from the tower can easily be seen from more than 15 miles away on a clear night.The current lighting system uses sophisticated computer software to provide a nightly spectacle that can be changed to match the season, celebrate holidays or promote special events.The original plain 130-watt incandescent light bulbs were replaced in 2011 with 259 high-output LED light nodes that each contains 12 red LEDs, 12 green LEDs and 12 blue LEDs.When the tower originally opened in 1981, there were three floors you could visit: the observation deck, a rotating restaurant and a night club.The observation deck sits in the lowest of those three floors.
